Governor Abigail Spanberger released a statement ahead of Independence Day 2026, reflecting on 250 years of American independence and the nation's founding principles.
She emphasized liberty, self-government, and the belief in shaping the future, noting the country's role as a "beacon of freedom and opportunity across the world." "As we mark 250 years of independence, we reflect on the enduring principles that inspired our nation — liberty, self‑government, and the lasting belief that we can shape our own future," Governor Spanberger said.
She acknowledged the "250 years of progress that has never once moved in a perfectly straight line," including rights won, setbacks, and the resilience of ordinary people. The Governor also honored veterans and service members who have safeguarded these ideals, and generations of Americans who have strengthened the nation. She highlighted Virginia's central role in this history, and will join celebrations at Monticello and in Williamsburg on July 4th, delivering remarks on the nation's founding and the responsibility to build a more perfect union.
