France 24 is reporting that world football governing body FIFA plans to proceed with consultations for a proposal to allow private investors to acquire a stake in a potential commercial subsidiary, despite widespread opposition. Europe's UEFA has threatened to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions if the plan moves forward.
FIFA stated it would press ahead with an "open and democratic" consultation process with stakeholders. It said all member associations should have the opportunity to consider the plan, adding that "Nobody is selling football." FIFA acknowledged feedback and concerns from confederations, including UEFA and CONCACAF, and reaffirmed its commitment to an open dialogue.
The organization said the plan could generate up to $4.2 billion, based on a $20 billion valuation for the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative. If approved, the project could provide each of FIFA's 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle. Potential investors reportedly include Thrive Capital, led by Joshua Kushner, and an arm of JP Morgan Chase.
