The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is seeking urgent support to combat increasing threats against journalists in the United States. According to the CPJ, newsrooms are increasingly seeking safety advice due to concerns that the current political climate could impede their ability to report without fear of retribution.
John Weis, Chief Development Officer at CPJ, emphasized the critical link between a free press and American democracy. "The fate of American democracy and journalists’ ability to work without fear are intertwined," Weis stated. He also noted the "significant increase in the number of newsrooms seeking safety advice".
CPJ is calling for donations to help protect journalists and ensure they can continue to keep the public informed. Weis urged supporters to contribute, stating, "Your support is urgently needed to help protect the journalists who keep us informed and help keep democracy alive."
