HONOLULU – A Filipino national, Remedios Alasaas, 66, of Kahului, Maui, has been charged with unlawfully voting as an alien in two federal elections, according to an announcement by United States Attorney Ken Sorenson.

Alasaas, who arrived in the U.S. around 2014 on an immigrant visa, registered to vote shortly after. Court records indicate she cast ballots in a general election on November 8, 2022, and a primary election on August 10, 2024, despite understanding she was not a citizen at the time.

If convicted, Alasaas faces up to one year in prison for each charge and a fine of up to $100,000. U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson said, “When non-citizens defraud the democratic process by voting, they undermine the integrity and credibility of our elections.” FBI Honolulu Special Agent in Charge David Porter added that the FBI “will continue its work to ensure the integrity of our elections.”

The FBI is investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Paris Yates prosecuting. Alasaas is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and any sentence would be determined by the court.
