Congresswoman Katherine Clark said Republicans have "betrayed the American people" after breaking two fundamental promises: to lower costs and to pursue "no new wars."
In a message to supporters, Clark said families are "struggling to keep their heads above water," with many "drowning in debt just to afford the basics." She said House Democrats are fighting for an "Affordable America," where the cost of gas, groceries, childcare and healthcare are within reach of working people.
Clark said Democrats will "win back the House Majority" in less than 40 days and "set our agenda into motion to deliver working Americans the relief, security, and more affordable future they deserve."
Turning to childcare, Clark criticized what she called Republicans' "latest idea: another draconian cut to childcare." She said the proposal would take childcare funding away from working parents — "many of whom are single moms" — and give it to married, stay-at-home parents.
"Let me be clear: Every family deserves affordable, quality childcare," Clark said, adding that Democrats want to "fix America's broken childcare system" and will deliver on that when they win back the House in November.
Clark also accused President Donald Trump of undermining American science, saying Republicans cut funding for scientific research and technological advancement "all to line the pockets of billionaire GOP-donors with massive tax breaks." She said scientists are out of work, labs are closing and "possible life-saving research has been stalled."
Clark said she met with the Union of Concerned Scientists in Arlington this month to discuss the impacts of Republican attacks on science, and said she is "more confident than ever that we will stop the GOP's war on science once and for all."
She also marked Yom Kippur, describing it as a time for renewal and hope, and said she joined neighbors outside the Burlington ICE facility to reaffirm hope "for an end to the evils of this administration."
