TIME Health is reporting that researchers have developed an experimental gene therapy that significantly lowered LDL cholesterol levels by more than 60%. The treatment, inspired by a natural genetic mutation found in individuals with low LDL and reduced heart disease risk, was detailed in a recent study. Scientists at Verve Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly & Co., indicate that if these initial findings are confirmed in larger studies, the therapy could become a single-dose solution for managing one of the most challenging risk factors for heart disease over extended periods.
