Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has set a new precedent by vetoing 31 bills during her first General Assembly session, marking the highest number of vetoes by a governor whose party also holds the majority in the legislature since 2000.

The Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) analysis reveals that Spanberger's actions include eight bills vetoed directly after the regular session. Additional legislation faced her veto after the General Assembly rejected her proposed amendments during the reconvened session.

This significant number of vetoes has drawn attention. Governor Spanberger addressed the criticism, asking, "Does that mean that I’m supposed to just accept and sign any bill?" according to reports. The situation highlights a notable dynamic between the executive and legislative branches in Virginia.
