The change follows an Alaska Supreme Court ruling allowing Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher, to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. Republicans have expressed frustration, calling Dan J. Sullivan a "sham candidate" attempting to deceive voters, a claim the Democratic candidate, Mary Peltola, has denied any involvement in.
Separately, USA TODAY said the House of Representatives' legislative schedule has been frozen for a second consecutive week due to a Republican rebellion focused on tightening voting restrictions. This standstill led to the abrupt cancellation of votes and lawmakers departing early for the July Fourth recess. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, noted that important legislative actions are bottlenecking.
