It said Democrats have blamed the Trump administration for terminating a cyclospora monitoring program within the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, or FoodNet, in July 2025. However, FactCheck.org's Science Editor Jessica McDonald found that this criticism overstated FoodNet's role. FoodNet is designed for trend analysis and estimating illness burden, not outbreak detection, and does not operate in the Midwestern states experiencing the current large cluster of cases. Food safety experts told FactCheck.org that the FoodNet change likely played little direct role in the current outbreak, though other staffing and funding cuts might have slowed the government's response.
FactCheck.org is also reporting that Medicaid and Affordable Care Act insurance marketplace enrollment has declined by about 8 million since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term. It said Democrats have attributed this drop to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, but health policy experts told FactCheck.org that the law's healthcare-related provisions have mostly not yet taken effect. Experts cited other reasons for the decline, including the expiration of enhanced ACA subsidies, potential confusion over the OBBBA, fear of Trump’s immigration crackdown, state pressure to address purported fraud, and state-level restrictions.
In its "Trump's Numbers" series, FactCheck.org published a quarterly update showing that job growth remains slower under Trump, with 716,000 jobs created as of June. It reported that inflation-adjusted average weekly earnings for private-sector workers rose 1.3%, while inflation worsened to 3.5%. FactCheck.org noted a 91% decrease in U.S. border apprehensions with Mexico, a 17.8% decrease in the trade deficit for the most recent 12 months compared to 2024, and a 23.6% increase in the S&P 500. It also stated that the public debt is up about 10.7%.
FactCheck.org addressed claims regarding the cause of Canadian wildfires, noting President Trump blamed Canada's "forest management." It said Science Writer Kate Yandell reported that experts on both sides of the border indicated large-scale forest management strategies for Canada's vast boreal forest would be both infeasible and likely ineffective. FactCheck.org said experts pointed to climate change as the primary reason for the increased frequency and severity of these wildfires, citing lengthening fire seasons, increased temperatures drying fuels, and more lightning strikes.
Finally, FactCheck.org is reporting on President Donald Trump's July 16 speech where he questioned the country's ability to hold "free and fair elections" due to "alarming vulnerabilities" in electoral infrastructure. It said Trump offered no evidence of widespread fraud. FactCheck.org also reported that Trump presented an incomplete and distorted summary of CIA reports on Venezuela's efforts to manipulate electronic voting machines when claiming U.S. machines are vulnerable.
