Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger have issued a joint statement supporting a bipartisan Senate effort to secure long-term disaster recovery funding, urging Congressional leaders to act after recent emergency funding omitted critical support for communities affected by the Palisades and Eaton Fires.
The statement follows a push by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-CA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and John Curtis (R-UT) for Congress to include these funds in any supplemental appropriations package. The local leaders emphasized the ongoing need for assistance, stating, "From Los Angeles to Sacramento to Washington DC, we have worked together to fight for recovery funding and resources for our communities, and we won’t stop until every family has returned home and every business has reopened its doors."
Bass and Barger acknowledged the resilience of affected families and businesses but stressed that the recovery's scale demands continued governmental support. They thanked the Senators for their advocacy, adding, "We thank Senators Padilla, Tillis, Schiff, and Curtis for listening to what our communities need and for working with us to push for this critical long-term disaster recovery funding that our communities deserve."
