Four firefighters have died following a burnover event while responding to initial attack fires in Colorado's Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.
Helitack Crewmember Nathan Matthews of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service succumbed to his injuries on July 24, 2026, after being medivacked to a burn unit. Sydney Watson (USWFS - UCR), Emily Barker (USFS - UCR), and Nick Hutcherson (USFS – Kaibab NF) died at the scene of the June 27, 2026 incident.
Matthews, 43, had 11 years of service as a full-time wildland firefighter. These tragic deaths contribute to the 47 firefighter fatalities reported in 2026, with reports aiming to increase understanding of their causes and how they can be prevented.
