The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is seeking District-based artists to design and install ground murals at intersections near four DC Public Schools, with applications due Monday, November 16, 2026 at 5 pm EST.

The Color the Curb: School Safety Program, run in partnership with the DC Department of Transportation and DC Public Schools, is open to artists experienced in large-scale exterior murals, youth engagement, and community-based projects. Selected artists will receive grant funds for design, materials, fabrication, installation, personnel, and project management.

CAH also announced that FY 2027 grant funding recommendations were presented by staff at Monday's Full Commission Regular Meeting on September 28, 2026, and were discussed and approved by CAH Commissioners. Applicants will be notified of results and the award disbursement process through a letter of intention to award or a letter of declination, sent to the email address on file in the CAH Grants Portal. Organizations are urged to double check their profile if the point of contact has changed since applying.

Notifications for the Art Bank Program, Arts and Humanities Education Projects, Art Exhibition Grant, East Arts, Field Trip Experiences, Projects, Events, or Festivals, and Public Art Building Communities will be sent during the week of October 12, 2026. Award notifications for the Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program, Capital Projects: Small, General Operating Support, and General Operating Support: Capacity Building are expected during the week of October 19, 2026.

CAH grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with applications reviewed and scored by independent advisory panels and final award determinations made by the CAH Commissioners. Additional grant awards and opportunities may be announced later in FY 2027.

The commission also introduced Sarah Weingast, who has served as in-house counsel for Washington, DC and federal arts institutions for over fifteen years. She was Deputy General Counsel to the National Endowment for the Arts, and later served as Associate General Counsel to the Kennedy Center and Assistant General Counsel to the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Weingast received her Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School and her Bachelor of Arts from McGill University, and is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and New York.

CAH's next Full Commission regular meeting, the first of FY 2027, is scheduled for 5:30 ET on Monday, October 19. The public may observe live on CAH's YouTube channel, and requests to speak during public comment must be submitted by Noon ET on Thursday, October 15, with written comments due by the same deadline.
