Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is launching intensified traffic safety initiatives throughout June to address increased outdoor activity and travel during the summer. These efforts will focus on reducing fatal, serious injury, and property damage crashes across the county.
Key initiatives include enforcing Virginia's "Move Over" law, which protects first responders and motorists stopped on roadways by requiring drivers to move over or reduce speed. Officers will also target violations related to excessively loud exhaust systems, which are illegal and impact community quality of life.
From June 8-14, the FCPD will conduct its "Road Shark" campaign, a high-visibility effort against dangerous driving behaviors. This campaign will specifically target speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving through increased education and enforcement.
The FCPD reminds residents to prioritize safety by obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, watching for pedestrians and cyclists, maintaining safe following distances, and never driving impaired. Drivers should also remain vigilant for school buses, as summer school and camps continue. Traffic safety is a shared responsibility, and these combined efforts aim to keep everyone moving safely throughout Fairfax County this summer.
