Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Cherokee, Clay, Kossuth, Montgomery, and Ringgold Counties in Iowa, responding to severe weather that began on May 15, 2026. This action activates state resources and initiates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and the Disaster Case Advocacy Program for affected residents.
The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program offers grants of up to $7,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. These funds can be used for home or car repairs, replacement of personal property or food, and temporary housing expenses, with original receipts required for reimbursement.
Additionally, the Disaster Case Advocacy Program addresses serious needs related to disaster-related hardship, injury, or adverse conditions. This program has no income eligibility requirements and will remain active for 180 days from the proclamation date. Disaster case advocates will assist clients in creating recovery plans and provide guidance and referrals.
Residents seeking assistance can find the Disaster Assistance Request Form and instructions on the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management website.
