The U.S. Department of the Treasury has launched "Operation Economic Outcast," an unprecedented campaign targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran and its global financial networks, announced Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent on August 24, 2026. The operation, initiated at President Trump’s direction, aims to sever every economic lifeline sustaining the Iranian regime.
Secretary Bessent likened the campaign to D-Day, stating, "Today, in that same spirit, we are launching an economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe." He emphasized the objective: "to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone." The Treasury has mapped Iran's networks for smuggling oil and evading sanctions, implementing a "zero-leakage approach" to block all revenue sources for the IRGC and the regime.
The campaign is a response to Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, its "Death to America" rhetoric, and its alleged role in murdering and maiming U.S. citizens and service members over 47 years. President Trump's administration is committed to "ending" the Iranian threat, moving beyond merely managing it.
New sectoral sanctions target five vital lifelines: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, broadening secondary sanctions risk. Simultaneously, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is sanctioning over 60 entities, individuals, and vessels worldwide involved in procuring illicit nuclear and missile technology, conducting cyber operations, and generating oil revenue.
Nations that facilitate Iran's activities face a clear ultimatum. "It is no longer acceptable to operate in the gray spaces of this conflict," Bessent said, warning that countries have a defined timeline to shut down identified activities or face unilateral U.S. action. Any entity facilitating money laundering for Iran will be removed from the U.S. dollar system, with Bessent declaring, "The clock is ticking."
Iran now faces a choice between "complete global isolation and a subsistence economy, or a path back to normalcy." The U.S. warns that economic engagement of any kind with the regime will expose those responsible to "the full reach of American power," signaling a sustained campaign until the regime stands alone.
