Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially opened the Gordie Howe International Bridge, driving a Michigan-built Ford Mustang across the new span that connects Michigan and Canada, marking a historic milestone after decades of effort.
Her administration, in partnership with Canada, successfully completed the project, which is set to strengthen the flow of people, goods, and commerce across North America's largest trade crossing. Governor Whitmer tirelessly navigated delays, political interference, and COVID-19 pauses to keep construction on track, ensuring significant economic benefits for Michigan.
“I’m proud to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which will do just that,” said Governor Whitmer, emphasizing the bridge as an engineering marvel and a symbol of partnership. “I’m proud we got the job done during my administration on behalf of so many Michiganders who fought for this bridge and for Michigan, Canada, and our future.”
Michigan Department of Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich highlighted the bridge's significance, calling it “a physical link between the state of Michigan and our most vital trading partner.” He underscored its importance for businesses and citizens relying on timely goods movement. Governor Whitmer advocated for the bridge across three presidential administrations, working with various U.S. departments and congressional offices to secure funding and staffing for operations.
