Jose Andres Hernandez Medina, a Mexican national living illegally in Lewisville, has been arrested and charged after allegedly assaulting federal immigration officers in the Eastern District of Texas, U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced.
The 38-year-old, who has been deported from the United States to Mexico at least three times, appeared in court on May 8, 2026. The federal complaint details an incident on April 30, 2026, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers attempted to stop his vehicle near an apartment complex in Lewisville.
Officers, using three vehicles with activated emergency lights and sirens, tried to box in Hernandez Medina on the I-35 frontage road. He allegedly accelerated aggressively, ramming one law enforcement vehicle and causing significant injuries that hospitalized a federal officer. He then collided with a second vehicle, seriously injuring another officer who was also hospitalized, before hitting multiple unoccupied vehicles and attempting to flee on foot.
Hernandez Medina faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. This case is part of "Operation Take Back America," a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration, eliminating cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime. The FBI is investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Calli Bailey prosecuting. A passenger in Hernandez Medina's vehicle was also apprehended and remains in custody on an immigration hold, while a third occupant is still at large. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
