Newsweek also reported on the proposed 2028 Democratic primary calendar. The Democratic National Committee's Rules & Bylaws Committee recommended keeping South Carolina as the first-in-the-nation state, with voting scheduled for Jan. 22, 2028. This would be followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia, leading up to Super Tuesday on March 7, 2028. Newsweek said this calendar, if ratified, has significant implications for the upcoming primary.
It noted that South Carolina's early position is seen as a strategic move to act as a "firewall" against insurgent left candidates, given its demographic of older Black voters. The publication suggested this setup would be favorable for Kamala Harris, who is reportedly planning another presidential run, as she is expected to perform well in South Carolina. Additionally, Newsweek indicated the calendar could benefit Jon Ossoff, the senator from Georgia, who has a strong track record with Black voters and could emerge as a formidable contender, potentially mirroring Barack Obama's 2008 Iowa caucus victory.
