Governor Gavin Newsom announced a $20 million state allocation, matched by Google, to support local journalism across California. This funding allows eligible state and local news organizations to apply for one-time grants of up to $250,000 each to bolster original reporting and civic engagement.
The extended California Civic Media Program, now funded for two additional years, aims to strengthen the state's journalism ecosystem, particularly focusing on local and community news outlets and those in underserved areas. This initiative seeks to expand access to trusted information and sustain California's press corps.
"Every Californian deserves access to accurate, trusted information. By investing in local newsrooms, California is bolstering the journalism that keeps communities across the state informed, connected, and engaged. I thank Google for matching this state contribution – helping local journalists further continue their work," said Governor Gavin Newsom.
The California Civic Media Program, a public-private partnership, is established within the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). The James B. McClatchy Foundation independently administers the application process, supported by Journalism Funding Partners and an Advisory Board. Applications are open until August 21, 2026, at 12 p.m. PT, with grant recipients to be announced in fall 2026.
