The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is urging all road users to prioritize safety as warmer weather brings more motorcycles onto Fairfax County roads. The department emphasizes that motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility between riders and drivers to reduce crashes during the busy summer months.

Motorcycle crashes can lead to severe consequences due to riders' increased exposure compared to passenger vehicle occupants. Unsafe decisions, such as speeding, distraction, impairment, or failing to check blind spots, can result in tragedy. The FCPD stresses that everyone, including motorcyclists, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, must remain alert, obey traffic laws, and make safe choices.

For motorcyclists, the FCPD advises wearing appropriate protective gear, including helmets and reflective clothing, and performing pre-ride checks on their bikes. Riders should also practice smart riding habits like staying alert, using signals, avoiding blind spots, maintaining safe distances, and never riding under the influence.

Drivers are reminded to "look twice" for motorcycles, which are smaller and harder to see, especially before turning or changing lanes. It is crucial to give riders ample space, use turn signals early, and respect that motorcycles have equal rights on the road. All drivers are also encouraged to drive sober and remain focused to ensure safer roads in Fairfax County this summer.
