NOAA Fisheries is showcasing its reliance on advanced technology for ocean resource management, deploying enforcement officers to combat illegal fishing, and implementing increased bluefin tuna quotas following successful international negotiations. These initiatives underscore the agency's multifaceted approach to marine stewardship.

During Technology Week (August 17–21, 2026), NOAA highlighted cutting-edge tools vital for understanding and managing marine life. This included advanced passive acoustic and aerial survey technologies, alongside innovative drone use, to monitor North Atlantic right whales, which recently experienced their most productive calving season in nearly two decades. Additionally, a new, smaller satellite tag design developed by a NOAA-affiliated scientist promises longer tracking capabilities for baleen whales, significantly improving scientific monitoring efforts.

In a significant development for U.S. fishermen, NOAA Fisheries is implementing increased quotas for bluefin tuna, North and South Atlantic swordfish, and North Atlantic albacore. These expanded opportunities are a direct result of historic negotiations led by the United States at the 2025 annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, providing greater flexibility and access to these valuable fisheries.

Concurrently, enforcement officers from NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Law Enforcement successfully completed deployments for Operation North Pacific Guard. This annual international mission actively targets illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which poses a severe threat to global fish stocks, ocean ecosystems, and the economic stability of law-abiding fishermen. Further scientific advancements include the discovery by NOAA scientists in Alaska that Pacific capelin, a crucial forage species, are capable of repeat spawning, challenging previous biological assumptions.
