Virginia State Parks invites visitors to celebrate Father's Day and Juneteenth with a variety of outdoor activities, while also emphasizing heat safety for summer adventures. The parks are offering guided hikes, nature programs, and paddling opportunities, including Father's Day canoeing at Shenandoah River State Park. "We hope you’ll come celebrate with us!" Virginia State Parks said.
As temperatures rise, Virginia State Parks advises guests to stay safe. "We want you to stay safe!" the parks said, recommending visitors pack plenty of water and salty snacks, use sun protection, and wear lightweight clothing. Guests should plan to hike during cooler parts of the day, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., and take frequent breaks in the shade, as exemplified at Douthat State Park.
Commemorating Juneteenth, special events are planned at James River and Pocahontas state parks to explore the rich history of the Black community. Looking ahead to 2026, the parks will host a History and Culture Weekend on June 13-14, featuring Douthat's 90th Anniversary, a Firefly Festival at High Bridge Trail, and a DCR 100th Anniversary Celebration at Wilderness Road State Park, among other events.
Virginia State Parks is also actively hiring for spring and summer positions, including roles in maintenance, interpretation, law enforcement, and as beach rangers. These opportunities offer full-time, part-time, and seasonal employment for those who enjoy working outdoors and supporting conservation efforts.
