Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a package of bipartisan bills into law, making permanent programs that help Michigan residents avoid foreclosure due to delinquent property taxes and expanding the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority's ability to issue bonds. These legislative actions aim to strengthen Michigan's economy and ensure stable housing for its citizens.
“Every Michigander deserves the chance to stay in their home,” said Governor Whitmer. She emphasized the administration's efforts to build more homes and assist residents through property tax relief, downpayment, rental, and mortgage assistance. The governor added that these bills will help more Michiganders avoid foreclosure and keep money in their pockets, while also investing in Wayne County.
Further legislation signed includes measures to restrict former executive branch officials and legislators from lobbying for two years, and to prohibit current legislators from direct lobbying while in office. Other bills allow golf carts on certain city streets, credit professional development to insurance association members, modify competitive bidding requirements for county road commissions, and transfer state-owned property in Eaton and Kent counties. Financial changes necessary for the FY27 budget were also implemented, alongside an exemption for certain venues without food preparation areas from food service establishment definitions.
