Historic August 28th Dates Mark Key Civil Rights and Suffrage Protests

On August 28, 1963, between 200,000 and 250,000 people peacefully marched to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., marking 100 years since the Emancipation Proclamation. This historic "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom" advocated for civil rights.

Decades earlier, on August 28, 1917, ten suffragists were arrested while picketing the White House. They sought to pressure President Woodrow Wilson to support the "Anthony amendment," which aimed to guarantee women the right to vote.
