The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Michigan has changed.
In a notice to customers, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting. It also noted that a visit may not be necessary at all.
"You may not need to visit an office," the agency said, adding that "you can handle a lot of your business with us online."
The SSA highlighted a range of services available through its website, including reviewing a latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application or appeal.
Customers can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision. Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.
Help and answers are available through the agency's FAQs, along with requests for a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.
The agency encouraged customers to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account, which it said millions of people already use to access their benefits.
