Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed May 2026 as "Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month," recognizing the significant contributions of over 7.2 million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent to the state's diverse heritage.
The proclamation highlights AAPI communities as the backbone of the country, noting their historical resilience and role in shaping California's movements and turning points. Despite facing past discrimination, AAPI leaders have consistently fought for change and solidarity.
California boasts the nation's largest AAPI population, which grew by over 25% from 2010 to 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing racial groups in the state. The community is notably diverse, with Californians from over 30 different countries and communities.
Newsom acknowledged the progress made from discriminatory policies but also addressed the persistence of anti-Asian hate acts across the country and within California. He emphasized the need to confront racism and advocate for the safety and inclusion of AAPI friends and neighbors, celebrating their strength and resilience. The month serves as a tribute to their irreplaceable legacy and essential role in driving the state and nation forward.
