The Social Security Administration says the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Nebraska has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed Nebraska residents to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

Among the online services the agency highlighted are reviewing a Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision.

Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.

The agency said help and answers are available online through its frequently asked questions, and that replacement Medicare and Social Security cards can be requested online.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to create a personal my Social Security account, saying millions have already done so to access their benefits.
