Terra Medi LLC is recalling all imported Karagounis Bros – Hellas Meze Golden Smoked Whole Herring due to improper evisceration, which poses a potential risk of botulism poisoning.

The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulation because Clostridium Botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera. Botulism can cause severe symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing, requiring immediate medical attention.

The affected product is a single whole smoked herring, vacuum-packaged and refrigerated, with a production date of 4/12/2025, a best before date of 4/12/2026, and lot number L120425F54. It was distributed to retail stores and wholesale distributors in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois, and New York. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.
