U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Andrii Dmyterko, a Ukrainian national convicted of criminal negligent homicide following a fatal truck crash in Thomasville, Alabama, that killed two people. ICE is requesting Alabama officials turn him over for removal from the country upon completion of his jail sentence.
The crash, which local reporting indicates occurred on May 6, 2025, involved Dmyterko driving a semi-truck while distracted by his cell phone, striking multiple vehicles. Two individuals died at the scene, and a third victim was rescued by bystanders.
Dmyterko subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal negligent homicide and was sentenced to two years in Clarke County Jail. Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said, "This alien from Ukraine was paroled into our country by the Biden Administration. Now, because of his reckless driving behind the wheel of a semi-truck, two people are dead."
Bis added, "ICE has lodged a detainer asking Alabama officials to cooperate with us and turn him over when his sentence is complete so that we can remove him from our country." Dmyterko was granted entry into the U.S. in 2024 under the Biden Administration’s humanitarian parole program for Ukraine.
