Governor Tim Walz has appointed Zachary Lyngaas as District Court Judge in Minnesota’s First Judicial District, filling the vacancy left by the Honorable Caroline H. Lennon. Lyngaas will be chambered in Shakopee, Scott County.

Governor Walz praised Lyngaas's diverse experience, stating, "In every role he holds, Zachary Lyngaas works to uphold the rule of law and serve the people of this state with distinction." He highlighted Lyngaas's background as a public defender, prosecutor, and member of the armed forces, noting his commitment to justice and fairness.

Lyngaas currently serves as an assistant public defender in the First District Public Defender’s Office, representing adult and juvenile clients. He is also a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, where he serves as First Sergeant for A Troop, 1-94 Cavalry.

His prior experience includes working as an assistant county attorney in the McLeod County Attorney’s Office and as a judicial law clerk. Lyngaas earned his B.S. from South Dakota State University and his J.D. from the University of St. Thomas School of Law, and volunteers as a mentor and youth sports coach. The First Judicial District encompasses Carver, Dakota, Goodhue, Le Sueur, McLeod, Scott, and Sibley Counties.
