The Social Security Administration said the operational status of its local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Nebraska has changed.

In a notice to beneficiaries, the agency directed the public to check the current status of their local office before planning a visit. It did not specify the nature of the change or which locations are affected.

The agency also reminded Nebraskans that many services can be handled online without visiting an office. "You may not need to visit an office," the notice said, adding that "you can handle a lot of your business with us online."

Online services highlighted by the agency include reviewing your latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

Beneficiaries can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision. Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.

Additional online options include reviewing frequently asked questions, requesting a replacement Medicare card and requesting a replacement Social Security card.

The agency encouraged the public to create a personal my Social Security account, saying millions of people already use the service to access their benefits information.
