Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan, the star and screenwriter of Netflix's "East of Eden," recently visited the Library of Congress to examine original John Steinbeck material, the Library said.

The collection included signed first editions of "Eden," manuscript pages from "The Grapes of Wrath" and roughly a dozen books from the 19th and early 20th centuries documenting the land and people of the Salinas Valley, the primary setting of "Eden," "Of Mice and Men" and other Steinbeck works.

Steinbeck considered "Eden" to be his career-defining work. The journal he kept while writing the book, the Library said, shows why.

The Netflix adaptation is a fresh take on Steinbeck's classic 1952 novel.
