An interdisciplinary team from the University of Pennsylvania has developed a mobile field laboratory to assess water quality and monitor antimicrobial resistance in the Galápagos Islands. Their research revealed a significant presence of multi-drug resistant bacteria in wastewater-contaminated areas.
These "hot spots" showed bacteria not only resistant to multiple drugs but also actively reorganizing their antimicrobial resistance genes. Microbiologist Daniel P. Beiting said, "a large percentage of the bacteria in wastewater-contaminated 'hot spots' were multi-drug resistant and were also reorganizing their antimicrobial resistance genes, which could lead to new, uniquely resistant strains."
This genetic reorganization raises concerns about the potential emergence of novel, highly resistant bacterial strains, highlighting the critical need for continued monitoring and intervention in these sensitive ecosystems. The mobile lab provides a crucial tool for ongoing surveillance.
