The Wall Street Journal is reporting that its editorial board argues new Trump border taxes set to take effect Tuesday amount to a gift to Chinese leader Xi Jinping and would strike at the U.S. biotech industry. It said the measures, described as a tariff attack on American biotechnology, would work against domestic interests.
The Journal said its editorial board also contends Senate Republicans could squander an opportunity to repeal what it calls climate coercion, referring to a proposal it labels the Save America From California Act.
In a separate item, the Journal is reporting that British police are investigating whether five suspects in a foiled possible terror attack have ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Journal said its editorial board noted that the Supreme Court split 4-4 on a religious charter school case, prompting a Jewish school in Oklahoma to try again.
In commentary, the Journal published a piece by David H. Petraeus arguing that increased oil flows from the Gulf and reduced global demand would aid the U.S. effort regarding Iran. It also ran an essay by Mark Brolin asserting that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's tenure helped create demand for the populist right-wing Alternative for Germany party.
The Journal said another commentary piece by David A. Shaywitz examined whether artificial intelligence can accurately tell stories about personal health, suggesting a well-designed system could clarify both what is known and unknown. A column by Bob Greene recalled a 1979 political observation by Bob Dole in a Chicago coffee shop.
The Journal also reported on a visit by its contributor Jillian Kay Melchior with the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert "Magyar" Brovdi, who it said has a warning for the U.S. and NATO.
