NPR is reporting that the NPR Network is entering its second year without federal funding and is asking the public for financial support to sustain its operations.
It said the network has been powered by people who come together to make the mission of public media real every day, and that the task of keeping an independent free press strong is urgent as headwinds to independent media rise.
NPR said the network continues because supporters stood with it during the loss of federal funding last year, and that together they have shown the free press can be protected and access to independent news and information ensured for everyone.
It said the task to sustain, transform and grow the essential public service is far from complete as the network enters its second year without federal funding, and that growing financial support is needed to strengthen the NPR Network into the future.
NPR said donations keep journalists on the ground asking questions that hold power to account, deliver news that cuts through disinformation, sustain the music, shows and programming that enrich people's lives, and provide an essential public service to all, free of paywalls.
It said public media is funded by the people, and that it cannot do the work without their support. The message was sent by National Public Radio, headquartered in Washington, D.C.
