The DC Special Education Hub will host an online Family Empowerment Series training, "All about IEP Goals: Appropriate, Ambitious, and Attainable," on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
The session will cover developing individualized education program goals for students, including setting goals, what to ask about what makes a goal appropriate, ambitious, and attainable, SMART goals and the metrics that make an effective goal, and how to support a child's learning at home. The Hub recommends that families whose child has an IEP have a copy on hand to review current goals during the training.
The training will be held on Zoom, and registrants will receive the Zoom link an hour or two before the session. The meeting ID is 940 9849 4003.
The Hub also pointed families to its Family Empowerment Video Series, a set of six dynamic videos on special education in DC Public and Public Charter Schools. All videos are available in English and Spanish with open captioning, for a total of 12 videos.
The Hub said its 2026-2027 Training Calendar is coming soon, with more sessions planned for families and caregivers, additional training for the entire Office of the Ombudsman, and continued trainings in Spanish.
The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education is an independent and impartial government agency that assists families and schools in DC with resolving complaints, concerns, and conflicts related to education. The DC Special Education Hub, an initiative of the office, helps families understand special education in the District of Columbia and connects them with tools, information, and one-on-one support. Families can reach the Ombudsman team Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM at (202) 741-0886 or om.budsman@dc.gov, and the SpEd Hub team at (202) 671-2890 or specialeducation@dc.gov.
