The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a Tsunami Information Statement on Saturday, confirming that a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the Scotia Sea poses no tsunami threat. The statement, released at 0830 UTC on August 22, 2026, was intended for national authorities supporting the UNESCO/IOC Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.

The preliminary earthquake parameters indicate the tremor occurred at 0823 UTC, located at 60.5 South, 47.2 West, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Despite the significant magnitude, the PTWC's evaluation concluded there is no tsunami threat from this event.

Consequently, no action is required from coastal regions. The PTWC said this would be the only statement issued unless additional data is received or the situation changes, providing reassurance to affected areas.
