George Mason University has earned the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability, becoming the only institution in Virginia and the only public R1 university on the East Coast to receive the new designation.
The classification recognizes Mason for integrating sustainability across its curriculum, research, operations, career preparation, and community engagement, the university said.
The announcement was one of several items in the university's latest news roundup. Mason also announced it will be home to the Virginia Quantum Hub, supported by a $3.7 million GO Virginia grant. The hub is described as an inclusive quantum ecosystem that generates intellectual property across research and technology, trains a highly skilled workforce, and addresses global innovation needs. President Gregory Washington and QSEC executive director Patrick Vora shared the news at a Washington Post LIVE "Building America: Quantum Innovation" event this week.
In other news, the Costello MBA Executive Mentoring Program, a partnership between the Costello MBA and the Costello Alumni Chapter, matches mentors and mentees according to the professional needs, interests, and aspirations of the student.
Mason also hosted the second annual Airborne Robotics Cup at EagleBank Arena, a STEM outreach competition that ran an intense 12-hour tournament featuring dynamic, lighter-than-air autonomous blimp "soccer" matches.
Faculty and staff are invited to Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day on Wednesday, Oct. 21, which will offer workshops, networking, and interactive sessions. Supervisors are encouraged to provide flexibility during work hours so employees can attend.
