United Airlines announced today a significant expansion of its Japan service, introducing new nonstop flights to Sapporo from San Francisco and a new daily route connecting Chicago and Tokyo-Narita. These additions solidify United's position as the leading U.S. carrier between the continental U.S. and Japan, offering travelers more options to explore Japan and connect across Asia.
Starting December 11, United will launch three-times-weekly winter seasonal service between San Francisco (SFO) and Sapporo (CTS), marking the first nonstop flights from the continental U.S. to Sapporo. This route, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will provide access to Hokkaido's world-class skiing and culinary scene, connecting travelers from nearly 80 U.S. cities through San Francisco.
Additionally, daily year-round service between Chicago O'Hare and Tokyo-Narita will commence on October 24. United will be the sole U.S. airline offering this route, utilizing a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. This new flight complements existing service to Tokyo-Haneda and facilitates one-stop connections to 21 destinations across Asia-Pacific through United or its joint venture partner ANA.
Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Global Alliances, United Airlines, said, "Whether customers are dreaming of skiing in Sapporo, planning a business trip to Tokyo with some exploration added in, or an even bigger adventure across Asia, United gives travelers more ways to get there than any U.S. airline." He highlighted the premium onboard experience and flexibility for onward journeys.
United, which flew over 1.8 million passengers between the U.S. and Japan in 2025, will operate up to 13 daily flights from the continental U.S. to four Japanese airports this winter. The new routes are subject to government approval and will be available for booking later today.
