Governor Abigail Spanberger has announced a second Free Fishing Weekend in Virginia, allowing residents to fish in fresh and salt waters without a license from Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27.

The weekend coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day and National Public Lands Day. Spanberger said the event offers a chance for anyone interested to try angling.

"Fall is the perfect time of year to explore the Commonwealth's vast and beautiful public lands," Spanberger said. "Adding this opportunity to our annual celebration of public outdoor recreation just makes sense. I encourage all Virginians to drop a line in the water and enjoy time outdoors this weekend."

Virginians are encouraged to use Explore the Wild, an online application developed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, to find a fishing spot. The app features more than 1,200 properties, including all federal and state-owned lands in Virginia that support outdoor recreation, plus a growing inventory of county and municipal lands. It allows searches by location, activity and species.

"If you've always wanted to give fishing a try, this is your chance. Find a beautiful spot or staffed event near you," said Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources David Bulova. "Whether it is one of Virginia's 50 wildlife management areas, 44 state parks, 26 state forests, or the thousands of local parks, this is an opportunity to do something fun and get outside. I hope to see you on the water!"

Earlier this month, Spanberger proclaimed Virginia Public Lands Month, recognizing opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, hunting, fishing, paddling, horseback riding and boating. Virginia's outdoor recreation industry contributes $14.4 billion annually and supports more than 126,000 jobs across the Commonwealth.
