Newsweek is reporting that President Donald J Trump personally intervened in a FIFA ruling to overturn a red card issued to U.S. Men's National Team star Folarin Balogun. The intervention allowed Balogun to play in a crucial World Cup knockout match against Belgium.
Newsweek said Balogun, the leading scorer for the USMNT, received a red card for an awkward step on an opposing player's ankle during a previous match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. This typically results in an automatic one-game suspension, making him ineligible for the Belgium game. FIFA abruptly overturned the suspension on Sunday.
The New York Times, The Associated Press and other outlets reported that Trump had called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to "inquire" about the red card. NBC reported that a U.S. official stated Trump "wanted to better understand" why the card was given and that "The U.S. government provided additional evidence that was used in the appeal process. Ultimately the correct and proper outcome was achieved."
Newsweek noted that the incident serves as a "Rorschach test" for public opinion on the president. Those critical of Trump may view it as another instance of his corruption and interference, even in sports. Conversely, those who appreciate Trump's "shamelessness as a form of realpolitik" might see it as a worthy endeavor that secured the U.S. team's full squad for a critical game in a successful tournament.
