The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Texas has changed.
In a notice to recipients, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office before visiting. It also said many visitors may not need to go to an office at all, because a range of business can be handled online.
The agency highlighted popular online services, including reviewing a latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision, according to the notice.
Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099 form.
For help and answers, the agency pointed to its frequently asked questions and to online options for requesting a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.
The notice also encouraged people to create a personal my Social Security account, describing it as a way to "Go Digital!" and discover benefits.
