James Hampton-Smith, 38, of Aberdeen, Maryland, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for attempting to provide contraband to an inmate at the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg. Chief Judge Matthew W. Brann handed down the sentence.

According to United States Attorney Brian D. Miller, Hampton-Smith was observed by security officers on August 14, 2024, climbing the prison's perimeter fence around 12:25 a.m. Utilizing a thermal imaging device, officers watched him jump onto prison grounds and place a backpack in a trash can near the facility’s basketball court. The bag contained vape pens, cell phones, cutting tools, and synthetic marijuana.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tatum Wilson and Robin Zenzinger prosecuted the case.
