A Zuni man, Ronnie Shack, 25, is facing federal charges after allegedly attacking another individual with a machete in Zuni, New Mexico. The incident, which occurred on March 26, 2026, reportedly began with an argument at Shack’s residence.
According to court documents, as the victim attempted to leave, Shack allegedly pursued him, slashing his back with a machete and continuing the pursuit down the street. Neighbors intervened by calling 911, leading to the victim's hospitalization for serious injuries.
Shack, an enrolled member of the Zuni Tribe, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault causing serious bodily injury in Indian country. He remains on conditions of release, with his trial date yet to be scheduled. If convicted, Shack could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
The announcement was made by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office. The case was investigated by the FBI’s Gallup Resident Agency and the Zuni Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Teleky prosecuting. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
