Nebraska Game and Parks is releasing rainbow trout across the state this fall, offering anglers of all skill levels opportunities in urban and community waters.
"Fall is here — and with it comes the annual fall stocking of rainbow trout across Nebraska," the agency said. Rainbow trout are described as a great starter fish, and the agency encourages anglers to harvest a few trout and bring someone new along. A stocking schedule is available online.
Anglers hoping to fill a paddlefish tag should note that paddlefish snagging season opens Oct. 1 on the Missouri River. The agency advises anglers to refresh their knowledge of where snagging is allowed, what permits are required and what regulations apply.
On Oct. 10, Chadron State Park will host a beginning fly-fishing and fly-tying event. All equipment is provided, and participants are encouraged to make a weekend of it with an overnight stay in a cabin or campsite. Lodging inquiries can be made by calling the park at 308-432-6167.
For those seeking more adventure, the East Branch of Verdigre Creek in northeastern Nebraska offers cold, spring-fed trout fishing. The stream flows through the rolling hills of Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area.
The agency also offers a full-color "My First Fish" certificate that families can download, personalize with a photo and details, then print and frame as a keepsake.
Nebraska Game and Parks is responsible for stewardship of the state's fish, wildlife, parklands and outdoor recreation opportunities.
