Mayor Karen Bass has initiated legal action and site cleanup following a fire at a long-problematic abandoned property at 4343 N. Babcock Avenue in Studio City. The Mayor visited the site with residents and leaders from the L.A. Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) after the fire, directing immediate measures to secure the location.
Bass instructed the LADBS to place a lien on the property to recover city costs and, with the City Attorney's help, pursue all available legal remedies against the owner. She also called for evaluating securing a court-ordered receiver for all of the owner’s properties that remain a nuisance to the community. The LADBS declared the property a “present, imminent, extreme, and immediate hazard” last Thursday.
City contractors have since secured the site, clearing debris, trimming overgrown trees, installing a permanent perimeter fence, and emptying and filling the pool with soil and gravel. Asbestos testing is underway before demolition can begin. The Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with Council Offices and City Departments, has resolved over 25 nuisance properties across Los Angeles since late last year.
