Newsweek is reporting in its "The 1600" newsletter that young voters have moved sharply away from President Donald Trump, citing polling data that shows a 47-point negative swing in his approval among 18- to 29-year-olds over two years. It said the shift on the economy among the same group was 73 points in the same direction over the same period.
The newsletter said that cohort moved 11 points toward the GOP in 2024 but has now abandoned Trump, and that Republicans appear to be counting on those voters staying home in November. It said both parties have weak support among young voters.
Newsweek also reported on a new campaign ad from Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders that promotes the state's welfare-to-work requirement and features a young man playing video games as the face of welfare. The newsletter said the ad targets young white men even though they are not the typical welfare recipient, and questioned the political logic of antagonizing a voting bloc that is up for grabs.
Separately, Newsweek said Troy Jackson, a Senate candidate in Maine, released an ad showing him drinking boba tea in a cafe. The newsletter said the ad is a poor fit for a race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins and argued Jackson should focus on criticizing Collins' voting record.
The newsletter also said it released a new podcast episode featuring a conversation with former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu about Democratic prospects in the South and his political ambitions. It said Landrieu did not directly answer whether he would support Kamala Harris in 2028.
