The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) recently undertook several key initiatives, including a Worker Day of Action, an ethnic media roundtable for immigrants, and an enforcement action against a Bronx car dealership, while also celebrating its 57th anniversary.

On International Workers’ Day, DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga hosted a day of action, distributing the Workers’ Bill of Rights to over 5,500 New Yorkers across all five boroughs. The agency also held its first-ever TikTok Live with Amazon Teamster Matt Multari, discussing the Protected Time Off Law and worker organizing experiences.

Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and Commissioner Mayuga, alongside other city officials, hosted an ethnic media roundtable to inform immigrant New Yorkers of their rights, sharing "Know Your Rights" materials. Separately, DCWP announced an enforcement action against "Honda of the Bronx" for widespread deceptive practices, resulting in $129,999 in civil penalties and consumer restitution.

Celebrating 57 years since the passage of NYC’s Consumer Protection Law, DCWP highlighted its expanded mission from consumer protection to enhancing the economic lives of all New Yorkers. Commissioner Mayuga emphasized the agency's commitment to empowering people against corporate surveillance and algorithms, vowing to continue advocating for consumers, workers, and businesses.
