Governor Mikie Sherrill announced an update on efforts to correct New Jersey's voter rolls following a software error in the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) system that improperly registered approximately 6,600 individuals between June 2023 and June 2024. The Governor emphasized her administration's commitment to accountability and urgency in addressing the issue.
Over the past week, the administration has taken aggressive steps, including mailing letters to all affected individuals and launching a dedicated website, nj.gov/MVCsystemerror2023, providing FAQs and support resources. The Division of Elections has initiated the removal of over 4,500 registrations solely linked to this error.
The remaining registrations will be referred to county election officials for further review. This additional step is crucial as initial findings suggest some individuals might be citizens, mirroring situations in other states with similar clerical errors. Governor Sherrill said, "Just as we have an obligation to remove everyone who is not eligible to vote, we also have a responsibility to protect the voting rights of eligible New Jersey citizens and ensure no one is improperly removed from the rolls."
Governor Sherrill criticized "MAGA Republicans" for attempting to "weaponize the issue to advance their voter suppression schemes" and target affected individuals. She affirmed her commitment to ensuring every eligible citizen can vote, every lawful vote is counted, and the government acts transparently.
