Violent crime in the United States is plummeting to historic lows, with homicides on track to reach their lowest level in over a century under President Donald J. Trump's administration. A new mid-year report from The White House, released July 29, 2026, confirms significant reductions across various crime categories, building on last year’s progress.
In the first half of 2026, homicides are down 18% compared to the same period last year, putting them on pace for the lowest level in at least 126 years. Other significant decreases include carjackings, which have fallen by 47%, motor vehicle thefts by 20%, robberies by 17%, and residential burglaries by 13%. Compared to the peaks of the past nine years, homicides are down 51%, carjackings 73%, residential burglaries 56%, and motor vehicle thefts 51%.
These dramatic drops are attributed to the Trump Administration's "relentless efforts to enforce the rule of law, back the police, and surge resources into communities." The steepest homicide declines have been observed in cities where the administration intervened, such as Memphis, where murders are down over 43%, and Washington D.C., which saw a more than 42% decrease so far this year. New Orleans reported a more than 32% drop, and Los Angeles saw murders fall over 18%.
President Trump said he promised to make America safe again, and the data demonstrates his administration is delivering on that commitment "faster and more decisively than any Administration in history."
